Bleeding Heart - Open Hearted
Sometimes the world seems upside-down, as if you are hanging from a thread. But trust that your connection is as firm as this flower. This is because of your open heart. Oddly, it feels unsafe to have a wide-open, trusting heart. It seems as if you would be less likely to be hurt if you shut down and protect yourself with little falsehoods. But the person who walks in the world with a heart wide open is actually safer. An open heart is an honest heart, someone who can say to the world, “This is who I am. I may seem upside-down to you, but it is exactly the way I need to be.” When you are open, you are more fun to be around. Insults slip right past because you know to trust only your own truth. |

Lenten Rose—Modest
There are roses and lilies in the garden, but this low-growing red bloom has a beauty and grace all of its own. It is perfect. But not better. Sometimes when we feel so strong and self-assured, it is easy to think we are superior. But true superiority is modesty. Superior means ‘above’ and when you are able to see things from a superior point of view, you see how a garden with just one flower is dull. A garden with roses and lilies, delphinium and daisies, exceed beauty’s imagination. Modesty is not to think of yourself as less than the other, but to see that you are one part of a complicated pattern that is made beautiful and whole because each individual is independently stunning. |

Flowering Crab—Spirited
Enough of being cooped up. It is time to breath spirit into your life. There is nothing more sad than a song sung without energy, a dance done with shuffling steps. Today you are being called to wave exuberantly to the wind like the flowering crabapple tree which explodes with passion as soon as the warm spring air blows open the buds. It takes courage to do what you love with joyful spirit. What if people laugh at you for being outrageous? What if they think you are silly? The origin of the word silly is ‘selich’ which means ‘blessed’ in German. If you want to bring blessings on yourself, be silly. Do it in private if you must, but if you go public, you might give others courage to be spirited too. |
